Franklin is a city located in Franklin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 21,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Franklin County.

The city of Franklin was founded in 1812 by Colonel John Filson and his brother-in-law Joseph Blanchard. The city was named for Benjamin Franklin, who had been influential in Filson's decision to settle in the area. Early settlers included Quakers and Germans. The first businesses were a distillery and a sawmill.

In 1824, the town plat was filed with the state legislature and designated as the county seat of Franklin County due to its central location within the county. A courthouse was built that year on land donated by Colonel Filson. In 1827, a jail was erected on property donated by Joseph Blanchard.

In 1830, a new courthouse was built on higher ground that became known as Court Square; it is still used today for judicial proceedings. In 1831, a public school opened with twenty-six students enrolled; it grew to have over one thousand students by 1850.

The early economy of Franklin depended heavily on agriculture; however, during the late 1800s industrialization began to take hold in the region and Franklin began to develop into an industrial center. Major industries include printing (the " Franklin Gazette"), shoe manufacturing (Sperry), food processing ( Campbell Soup), and plastics (BASF). Today, many of these same industries are still major contributors to the local economy; however, other sectors have also emerged including health care services (St Luke's Hospital) and technology companies (Nextera Energy Solutions).
