Goshen is a city in and the county seat of Allen County, Ohio, United States. The population was 20,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lima, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Goshen is known for its historic downtown district and its many churches and religious organizations.
The city was founded in 1812 by John Goss and James Hall on land that had been donated by General Zebulon Pike. The first settler in what would become Goshen was Ebenezer Brown, who arrived in 1815. Brown built a cabin on the banks of the Miami River where he established a ferry service across to Kentucky. In 1824, Brown sold his property to James Hall who laid out the town's streets and erected a public square named after George Washington. The first schoolhouse was built in 1825; it burned down in 1827 but was rebuilt that same year.
The early economy of Goshen depended heavily on agriculture; however, this changed with the arrival of the railroad in 1853 which made transportation easier and allowed for goods to be shipped into town from elsewhere in Ohio and beyond. This growth led to an increase in manufacturing as well as services such as banking and insurance; these industries continue to be important today. In addition to its historical significance, Goshen is also known for its many churches: there are currently over sixty denominations represented within the city limits alone!
