Groveport is a small town located in Franklin County, Ohio. The population was 10,814 as of the 2010 census. Groveport is home to many businesses and homes. The economy of Groveport is based on agriculture, manufacturing, and retail sales.
The history of Groveport can be traced back to 1798 when General James Wilkinson and his troops camped near the present day site of the town. In 1812, Colonel John Wright settled in what would become Groveport and began farming. Wright was one of the first settlers to establish a mill on the Scioto River. In 1816, Joseph Miller built a sawmill on Mill Creek near where the current Main Street crosses it. By 1830 there were twenty-one mills operating in Groveport; most were powered by water from local creeks or rivers.
In 1832, Samuel Wetherill purchased land along Mill Creek and erected a gristmill which became known as Wetherill's Mill after its owner. In 1840, John Sullivant established a store on Main Street which became known as Sullivant's Store; it remained open until 1916 when it burned down. The building now houses City Hall.
In 1850, George Hoadley built a hotel on what is now called State Street; it operated until 1907 when it burned down also. The building now houses an antique store called "The Attic."
In 1865-1866, during the Civil War, General William Tecumseh Sherman passed through Groveport en route to Cincinnati and then to Columbus via Xenia and Dayton . His army destroyed much of what was then Groveport including Wetherill's Mill (now restored), Sullivant's Store (now City Hall), Hoadley's Hotel (now an antique store), Miller's Sawmill (now part of Riverside Park) ,and several other buildings including Wright’s Tavern which still stands today at 522 Main Street next door to Wright’s Tavern Museum operated by volunteers from the Historical Society Of Franklin County Incorporated . Sherman also burned down most of the homes in town leaving only about thirty standing at that time . Today there are over two hundred homes in Groveport with many more being renovated or constructed each year due largely to its central location within Franklin County making access easy from all directions .
