Nelsonville is a small town located in Nelson County, Ohio. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Nelson County.

The town was founded in 1811 by James and Nancy ( Powell) Nelson. The first settler in the area was Ebenezer Sabin, who arrived in 1798. The town's name is derived from General Horatio Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

The economy of Nelsonville is based largely on agriculture and manufacturing. Major employers include the Nelsons' Dairy Farm, which produces raw milk for local consumption; J&L Metals, a manufacturer of metals products; and K&M Manufacturing, which makes agricultural equipment and supplies. There are also several small businesses that provide services to local residents.

Nelsonville has two schools: Nelsonville-York Elementary School and Nelsonville-York Jr./Sr.-High School (formerly known as York High School).
