Pickerington is a city located in Franklin County, Ohio, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 60,527. Pickerington is part of the Columbus Metropolitan Area.
Pickerington was founded in 1811 by General William Henry Harrison and named for Sir George Pickering, Governor-General of India. The city was incorporated in 1816. The first settler in Pickerington was David Humphreys who built a cabin on what is now known as Humphreys Hill. By 1825 there were forty homes and businesses in the community. In 1835 Pickerington had a population of 150 people and by 1840 it had grown to 1,000 residents.
The early economy of Pickerington was based on agriculture and manufacturing. By 1860 there were twenty-one businesses in the town including two flour mills, two sawmills, two gristmills, a pottery factory and a blacksmith shop. Manufacturing continued to be an important part of the economy through the twentieth century with companies such as Bemis & Company (a manufacturer of agricultural equipment), American Axle (makers of trucks), J&L Steel (makers of railroad cars) and Worthington Pump (makers of pumps) all locating in or near Pickerington during that time period.
Today, much has changed since Pickerington's early days as an agricultural community; today it is home to one Fortune 500 company - Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company - as well as many smaller businesses that support its thriving economy including restaurants such as Buca di Beppo Italian Restaurant and Starbucks Coffee Company; retailers such as Target Corporation; medical centers like Good Samaritan Hospital; technology companies like Microsoft Corporation; and more!
