Trenton, OH

Trenton is a city located in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Mercer County. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 80,821. Trenton is the principal city of the Trenton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area which had a population of 153,702 in 2010. The metropolitan area is also included in the Cincinnati- Middletown- Wilmington, OH-KY-IN Combined Statistical Area which had a population of 1,053,591 as of 2010.

The city was founded by European Americans in 1794 and was originally known as New Philadelphia. It was incorporated as a village in 1825 and became an independent city in 1851. Trenton grew rapidly during the late 19th century as an industrial center due to its location on the Great Lakes shipping route and its proximity to major markets in Ohio and Michigan. The economic decline of manufacturing during the early 21st century led to decreased employment opportunities and increased poverty rates within Trenton's neighborhoods; however, redevelopment efforts have begun to restore some parts of the city to their former glory.
