The city's name derives from Troy, New York, although there is no evidence that this was where the first settlement took place. The area around Troy was settled by Europeans in 1796 and was incorporated as a village in 1825 and as a city in 1854. It became known as "the Jewel of the Western Reserve" because of its many prosperous businesses and its location near several important transportation routes. The city's growth accelerated with the opening of the Michigan Central Railroad line through town in 1853 and with the establishment of General Motors' assembly plant nearby in 1908.

Today Troy is an industrial center with significant manufacturing activity including automobile production by GM and parts manufacture by Eaton Corporation; however, it has also become known for its high-quality educational institutions including two universities (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Capital University) as well as numerous other colleges and universities. There are also many medical facilities within the city limits including Mercy Health System's main campus which comprises more than 2 million square feet (190 hectares) on over 400 acres (160 hectares).
