Tonkawa is a small town located in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pottawatomie County.

The town was founded in 1887 by James and Mary (Baker) Tonkawa and named for their Kiowa Indian friend, Tonka-wi-ya. The first post office opened in 1888. The town was incorporated on February 15, 1907.

Tonkawa is home to the Pottawatomie County Courthouse and Jail Complex, which includes the historic jail built in 1907 and renovated in 1998. It also has a public library, several businesses including a grocery store, gas station/convenience store, restaurant and two banks with branches throughout the community. There are also several churches in Tonkawa serving both Protestant and Catholic congregations.
