The borough of Broomall was incorporated on April 2, 1892 from portions of Upper Darby Township and Lower Darby Township. It is named for the broom plant which was abundant in the area when it was first settled. The borough's early economy was based on agriculture and coal mining but today it is primarily a residential community with a small commercial center.
