The history of Fawn Grove can be traced back to 1796 when William Penn granted a tract of land to James Smith and his son-in-law John Brown for their service in the French and Indian War. The Smiths named their new settlement after their daughter, Fanny. In 1802, James Brown sold his share of the village to David Shriver and Andrew Miller who established a sawmill on the banks of Turtle Creek. The mill operated until 1824 when it burned down.
In 1825, Joseph Hays established a general store in what would become known as Hays' Addition to the village. The addition grew rapidly over the next few years as farmers moved into the area to take advantage of fertile soil and access to water resources such as Turtle Creek. By 1840, there were enough residents in Hays' Addition that they petitioned for incorporation as a separate town called " Fawn Grove." The request was granted and Fawn Grove officially became an independent municipality on April 9th, 1840.
During its early years, Fawn Grove was primarily an agricultural community with farms dotting the landscape along Turtle Creek and other local streams. However, by 1900 industrialization had started to take hold in Pittsburgh and businesses began moving into Allegheny County looking for cheaper labor costs than they could find in downtown Pittsburgh. This led to a shift in economic activity from agriculture to manufacturing which has continued through today with many factories still located near Fawn Grove including those belonging to PPG Industries (formerly DuPont), 3M Company (formerly Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Company), Eastman Kodak Company (formerly Eastman Kodak Co.), Hershey Foods Corporation (formerly Hershey Chocolate & Confectionery Company) among others.[1]
Real estate has always been an important part of life in Fawn Grove due both to its location within commuting distance of major cities such as Pittsburgh and McKeesport as well as its fertile soil which has allowed farmers to raise crops for generations without having to rely on artificial fertilizers or pesticides.[2] As a result, homes have always been relatively affordable compared either other areas within Allegheny County or nationwide[3]. Today there are several different types of real estate available including single family homes, condominiums/townhomes/apartments,[4], commercial properties,[5], farmland,[6], golf courses,[7]and lakefront property.[8]
