Hershey, PA

Hershey, Pennsylvania is a town of about 120,000 people located in the central part of the state. It is known for its chocolate and its Hershey's Kisses. The town was founded in 1894 by Milton S. Hershey and his brother-in-law, James L. Valentine.

The Chocolate Factory, which is now a tourist attraction, was originally built as a factory to produce candy bars using the new process of tempering chocolate with milk instead of water. The factory became famous after World War I when Milton Hershey began producing chocolates with milk chocolate instead of regular chocolate. Today, Hershey manufactures other types of candy as well as ice cream and other food products.

Real estate in Hershey is mainly residential with some commercial development along Route 22 (the main road through town). There are also several parks and recreational areas including the Chocolate Lake Recreation Area which features a swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball courts and a children's play area.

The median price for single family homes in Hershey during the third quarter of 2006 was $269,500 while the median price for condos was $144,000. The average price per square foot for single family homes was $135 while the average price per square foot for condos was $102.
