Jenkintown is a borough in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,836 at the 2010 census. Jenkintown is located in the Philadelphia metropolitan area and is bordered by Upper Darby to the north, Cheltenham Township to the east, West Chester to the south and Abington Township to the west.
The borough of Jenkintown was incorporated on February 9th, 1891 from portions of Cheltenham Township and West Chester Boroughs. The borough derives its name from John Jenkin (1759-1841), a Quaker merchant who settled in what became Jenkintown in 1793. Jenkin's grandson, also John Jenkin (1814-1892), served as Mayor of Philadelphia from 1872-1874.
Jenkintown is home to many well known businesses including JC Penney, Macy's and Sears which have been operating since 1886, 1902 and 1905 respectively. Other notable businesses include Bank of America (1906), Kmart (1962) and Starbucks (1987).
Jenkintown has seen significant residential development over the past few decades with many new homes being built on large lots in close proximity to one another. Many new developments are situated along major thoroughfares such as Ardmore Avenue which connects Cheltenham Township with Upper Darby Borough and Route 611 which connects West Chester with Abington Township.
In recent years there has been an increase in luxury home construction within Jenkintown with some properties reaching prices well above $1 million. Some of these high end residences can be found along Ardmore Avenue near Ardmore Golf Club or on Woodland Drive near Willow Grove Park which features a private golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus
