The borough of Mansfield was founded in 1794 and incorporated as a borough in 1892 from portions of the townships of Westtown and Easttown within Chester County. The borough's name commemorates John Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, who served as Chief Justice of the British House of Lords from 1768 to 1778 and as Secretary for War from 1772 to 1774 under George III.

Mansfield is located at the center of Chester County and is bordered by Westtown Township to the north, Easttown Township to the east, Lower Makefield Township to the south and Quakertown Borough to the west
