Marcus Hook, PA

Marcus Hook is a borough in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,936 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

The borough was founded in 1755 and named for General Marcus Cresap. The first settler in Marcus Hook was Nicholas Gist who built a cabin on the banks of the Brandywine River in 1712. The town prospered as a shipping center during the American Revolution and became an important industrial center during the 19th century with production of iron and steel, textiles, chemicals, and glass products. In 1892 Marcus Hook became one of the first municipalities to install electric streetlights.

Today Marcus Hook is an affluent suburb of Philadelphia with many well-preserved historic homes and commercial buildings dating from the late 19th century through to the early 21st century. The borough has been designated a National Historic Landmark for its significant role in industry and commerce during the late 19th century. The borough extends along both banks of Brandywine Creek for about 4 miles before terminating at Chester County line near Valley Forge National Historical Park . According to the United States Census Bureau, Marcus Hook has an area of 2 square miles 。
