Mountain Top is a small town located in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The town was founded in 1892 by George W. and Anna C. (Harrison) Mountain and named for their home in Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania. The first business opened on Main Street that year: a general store run by George W. Mountain and his son-in-law, J.W. Harrison Jr..
In 1906, the Mountain family built a hotel on the site of what is now the Village Inn & Suites Hotel on Main Street (Route 61). The hotel featured an indoor pool and spa which were popular with tourists visiting nearby attractions such as Blue Ridge Summit and Sunbury Gardens.
The original building was destroyed by fire in 1951 but was rebuilt shortly thereafter at its present location just south of Route 61 on Old Mill Road (Upper Main Street). In 1984, the hotel became known as The Village Inn & Suites after it merged with another local motel chain, The Village Inn of Reading PA., to form one large company under the name "Village Inn."
The original building can still be seen from Route 61 near where it intersects Old Mill Road; it has been converted into apartments called "The Villages at Mountain Top."
Today's economy is based largely on tourism with visitors coming to see attractions such as Blue Ridge Summit less than an hour away and Sunbury Gardens about 45 minutes away by car or train respectively. There are also several bed and breakfasts located within walking distance of downtown including "Betsy's Bed & Breakfast" which has been in operation since 1978; "Garden View Guest House" which opened its doors in 1988; "Hilltop Manor Bed & Breakfast" which opened its doors in 1994; "Oak Tree Cottage B&B" which opened its doors in 1998; and finally " White Oak Farm Bed & Breakfast", which opened its doors in 2002. There are also several restaurants located within walking distance including Subway®, McDonald's®, Wendy's®, Pizza Hut®,and Dunkin' Donuts® among others...
