Narberth is a small town located in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,839 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Narberth Township and is bordered by East Norriton to the north, Lower Merion Township to the east, and Upper Merion Township to the south.
The town's name comes from John Narberth, who purchased land in 1740 and built a mill on what is now known as Mill Creek. The first settler in Narberth was Ebenezer Smith, who arrived in 1799. Smith's mill served as a stop along the Brandywine Canal until 1827. In 1825, James Buchanan built a gristmill on Mill Creek that became known as Buchanan's Mill. The town grew around this mill until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. A new gristmill was erected nearby and named after James Buchanan.
Narberth became an incorporated borough in 1892 and had its own post office until it merged with East Norriton in 1907. The borough's economy was based on agriculture until World War II when manufacturing began to take hold; however, this industry has since declined. Today, Narberth is primarily a residential community with some businesses located along Main Street ( Pennsylvania Route 100).
