Chilton, TX

Chilton is a small town located in Williamson County, Texas. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Chilton is known for its agricultural heritage and its proximity to Austin.

The first settlers in Chilton arrived in 1837. The town was founded by James and Martha (Mc Kinney) Chilton, who were early pioneers in Williamson County. The Chiltons built a cabin on the banks of the Colorado River and began farming the land. In 1853, James Chilton built a gristmill on the Colorado River near what is now downtown Chilton. The mill operated until 1902, when it was destroyed by a flood.

Chilton's economy has traditionally been based on agriculture and ranching. Today, however, the town is home to several businesses that provide services to local residents and tourists visiting Austin: an Ace Hardware store; two restaurants (The Pecan Lodge and Cowboy Jacks); a bank (the First National Bank of Chilton); an insurance agency ( Hartman Insurance Agency); two gas stations; a salon; two car dealerships; two antique stores; three hair salons; four churches; three newspapers (the Daily Herald-Record and the Williamson County News-Telegram); four radio stations (KVUE-AM/FM/TV, KUTX-FM/AM, KBNG-FM/AM), as well as several other small businesses.

The community's primary source of revenue comes from property taxes levied on residential properties and commercial properties within the town limits. In addition to property taxes, other sources of revenue include sales taxes collected at local businesses and fees charged by municipal services such as trash collection and street maintenance.

Chilton is located just north of Austin along Interstate 35W between Round Rock to the east and Georgetown to the west. It is accessible via Exit 434 off I-35W or via U .S . Highway 183 which leads into town from Georgetown south of Austin . There are also several access points from U .S . Highway 290 which runs through Round Rock north of I-35W
