Fort Hood is a large military installation located in central Texas. The population of Fort Hood was 154,000 as of the 2010 census. The city of Killeen is the county seat and largest city in Fort Hood County.

The land that now comprises Fort Hood was originally granted to the Republic of Texas by the Mexican government in 1835. In 1836, General Sam Houston ordered construction of a military post on the site, which became known as Camp Bowie. The post was renamed Fort Hood after General Winfield Scott took command in 1841.

During World War II, Fort Hood served as a training ground for soldiers preparing for combat overseas. After the war, the post underwent major expansion to accommodate an increased military presence. Today, Fort Hood is home to more than 50,000 active duty troops and 10,000 civilian employees.
