The city was founded in 1922 and incorporated in 1951. The city's name is derived from the Richland Farms development, which was developed by J.M. Richland and Associates in 1941 on land that had been part of the original homestead of John Neely Bryan, who served as President of the Republic of Texas and later as U.S. Senator from Oklahoma Territory.
The city has experienced steady growth since its incorporation; it grew by 3,000 residents between 1990 and 2000 and by an additional 5,000 residents between 2000 and 2010 (according to the U.S Census Bureau). This growth has been largely due to suburbanization – North Richland Hills is one of several suburbs that have grown rapidly because they are located close to downtown Dallas – as well as strong economic conditions in the area (particularly in technology). As a result, North Richland Hills has become one of the most affluent suburbs in Dallas County; according to Forbes magazine, it ranks No. 4 among America's wealthiest suburbs (behind Beverly Hills, California; Bel-Air Estates, Los Angeles; and Newport Beach, California).
