Poteet is a small town located in Williamson County, Texas. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Williamson County. Poteet is known for its fertile farmland and cattle ranches.

The town was founded in 1875 by J.M. Poteet and his brother-in-law, W.H. Youngblood, on land donated by the Youngblood family. The town was named for General Poteet, a hero of the Mexican–American War who had been killed in battle near Monterrey, Mexico two years earlier. A post office has been in operation at Poteet since 1876.

Poteet's economy has traditionally been based on agriculture and ranching; however, with recent growth in the area around Austin due to increased job opportunities and population growth within Williamson County as a whole, there has been an increase in commercial development within the town limits as well (particularly along Highway 290). In addition to its primary businesses (including restaurants and retail stores), Poteet also features several small businesses that cater to local residents (such as a car dealership and a pet store).
