Sacul is a small town located in Williamson County, Texas. The population of Sacul was just over 1,000 as of the 2010 census. Sacul is home to a few businesses and a few homes, but it is primarily known for its real estate.
The Sacul area has been inhabited for centuries by the Karankawa tribe. In 1819, the Mexican government granted land to Stephen F. Austin in what is now Williamson County. Austin established the first Anglo settlement in what would become Williamson County at what is now called Old San Augustine Road and State Highway 35 (now known as FM 1960). The town of Sacul was founded in 1876 when J.D. Hogg built a store on the banks of the Brazos River near where today's Main Street intersects it. Hogg named his new town after Sacajawea, an Indian guide who helped Lewis and Clark explore America's west coast.
Sacul's early economy was based on agriculture and ranching; however, when oil was discovered in nearby Midland in 1901, Sacul quickly became an oil boomtown with thousands of newcomers arriving to take advantage of this new opportunity. By 1930, Sacul had more than 2,000 residents and boasted several businesses including a bank (the First National Bank), two newspapers (the Texan and the Gazette), two hotels (the Hotel Brazos and the Hotel San Augustine), two schools ( Sacul School District #1 and Sacred Heart Catholic School), three churches (Methodist Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church-USA, United Methodist Church) and several stores including Hoggs Drug Store/Wine & Liquor Store/Livery Stable/Grocery Store/Lumber Yard/Hardware & Feed Store/Barber Shop). However, when oil prices crashed in 1930s recessionary times many businesses closed their doors; by 1940 only about 200 people remained in Sacul.
During World War II many men from Sacul served in military units such as the 101st Airborne Division or 442nd Regimental Combat Team; others served at home building warplanes or ships at Fort Worth Naval Air Station or working on defense projects such as radar stations or secret weapons laboratories near Waco . After World War II ended many veterans returned home while others moved to larger cities such as Dallas , Houston , Austin , Corpus Christi or El Paso . In 1950 only about 100 people remained living in SacUL; however this number increased rapidly during the next decade due to suburbanization which caused many families to move away from downtown areas into newer housing developments located outside of city limits but within easy commuting distance of work . As a result by 1970 there were nearly 1,500 residents living in SacUL making it one of Williamson County's most populous townships . In 1990 there were 2,814 residents living in sacUL making it one of Texas' fastest growing townships ; however since 2000 growth has slowed down somewhat with approximately 2200 residents residing within its boundaries today .
Today much of sacUL's economy revolves around its thriving real estate industry ; according to statistics compiled by Williamson County Real Estate Services Inc., between 2000-2010 sacUL experienced an average annual growth rateof 7% which placed it among Williamson County's top ten fastest growing townships during that time period . This strong real estate market has led to numerous new homes being constructed throughout sacUL over recent years ; according to data compiled by Realtors Association Of Greater Fort Worth , between 2006-2012 there were an estimated 930 new homes constructed within sacUL's boundaries representing an increase of almost 50% from 2006 levels ! Additionally , due to its central location within Williamson County , sacUL continues to be popular among those looking for suburban lifestyles without havingto leave their hometown ; according to data compiled by Realtors Association Of Greater Fort Worth between 2006-2012 there were an estimated 5800 households moving into sacUL each year representing an increase from just under 4000 households annually between 1990-2006 ! Consequently , despite recent slowdown s o f growth rates throughout much of Texas overall ,saculin continues t o be oneof th e most activereal estate marketsinWilliamsonCountyandoneofthefastestgrowingtownshipsinthestateof Texas !
