San Elizario is a small town located in the San Elizario Valley in Webb County, Texas. The population was 9,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Angelo, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The town was founded in 1881 by James Hogg and his wife, Addie J. Hogg. The town was named for Saint Elizabeth of Hungary (Elisabeth of Hungary), who is also known as Saint Elizabeth of Russia or simply Elizabeth.
The first business in San Elizario was a general store operated by James Hogg and Addie J. Hogg. In 1884, they built the first hotel in San Elizario – the Hotel San Elizario – which still stands today and is currently operated as a bed and breakfast inn by the descendants of James and Addie Hogg.
In 1886, William Bollaert opened a grocery store in San Elizario; it remains open today as Bollaert's Grocery Store. In 1888, Jules Fournier opened a bakery; it remains open today as Fournier's Bakery & Cafe.
In 1890, Amedee Lefevre opened a saloon; it remains open today as Lefevre's Saloon & Eatery (formerly known as Lefevre's Place).
In 1892, Louis Poulin opened a livery stable; it remains open today as Poulin Stables & Carriage Company (formerly known as Louis Poulin Carriage Company).
In 1896, George Waggoner built the first house on Main Street – now known as Waggoner Place – which still stands today and is currently occupied by his descendants.
In 1899, John Ewing built the first brick building on Main Street – now known as Ewing Building – which still stands today and is currently occupied by his descendants.
In 1902-1903, Frank Clements erected several buildings on East Avenue (now known collectively as Clements Plaza); these buildings remain standing to this day and are used for various commercial purposes including retail stores and restaurants.
In 1905-1906, Amedee Lefevre erected several buildings on North Avenue (now known collectively as Lefevre Plaza); these buildings remain standing to this day and are used for various commercial purposes including retail stores and restaurants.
