Zapata is a small town in Zapata County, Texas. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is located on U.S. Highway 281 about midway between Del Rio and Eagle Pass.
The area around Zapata was first settled by the Tonkawa Indians in the 1700s. In 1849, James Sweeny established a trading post here and named it after his home town of Zapata, Mexico. In 1884, Zapata became an official county seat when it was chosen over Eagle Pass because of its location on the Santa Fe Trail.
In the early 1900s, cotton farming became the mainstay of the local economy. However, with mechanization and competition from other crops, cotton production declined in importance by the 1960s.
