Monterey, VA

Monterey is a town located in Hanover County, Virginia. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Monterey is home to the Monterey Winery and Vineyards, which produces award-winning wines. The town's namesake comes from the Spanish word montaña, meaning mountain.

The history of Monterey dates back to 1752 when English settlers arrived in the area. The town was founded in 1792 and became an important stop on the horse-drawn wagon trail between Richmond and Washington D.C. In 1846, a railroad line was built through Hanover County and Monterey became an important transportation hub for goods and passengers heading north or south.

Today, Monterey is a thriving small town with a rich history that is being preserved through preservation efforts by local organizations and businesses. The downtown area features several historic buildings including the courthouse (built in 1892), post office (built in 1898), bank (built in 1902), general store (built in 1907), millinery shop (built in 1910), blacksmith shop (built in 1912) and two churches - First Presbyterian Church (1893) and United Methodist Church (1901).
