Oakwood is a town located in Henrico County, Virginia, United States. The population was 10,827 at the 2010 census. Oakwood is bordered by the City of Richmond to the south and west, Midlothian to the north and east, and Short Pump to the northeast.
Oakwood was founded in 1736 as part of a land grant from King George II to Major John Robinson. The town was originally called Robinson's Ford after its founder. In 1781, General Anthony Wayne led an American victory over British forces at the Battle of Yorktown near Robinson's Ford; this event helped secure American independence. After the war, many wealthy Richmonders moved into Oakwood and built large homes on large lots.
Today, Oakwood is a suburban community with many well-maintained homes and tree-lined streets. It is home to several schools (including two private schools), businesses (including a number of high-tech companies), and recreational facilities (including a public park).
