The town was founded in 1736 as part of an effort to create a new frontier for the colony of Virginia. It was named for Major General John Shackelford, who fought in the French and Indian War. The town's early economy was based on tobacco farming and milling. In 1837, a railroad line was built through Shacklefords connecting Richmond with Lynchburg. This led to an increase in industrial development, including textile mills and coal mines.
