Merrillan is a small town located in the northwest corner of Wisconsin. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. Merrillan is located in Price County and is bordered by the Town of Merrillan to the east, the Town of La Crosse to the south, and by Trempealeau County to the west.
The town was first settled in 1851 by settlers from Illinois. The town was named for James Merrill, a United States Senator from New York. The community's early economy was based on agriculture and lumbering. In 1892, Merrillan became home to Wisconsin's first electric light plant. In 1906, Merrillan became home to Wisconsin's first automobile dealership. Today, Merrillan is primarily a rural community with a small commercial center located along Highway 14.
