The history of Bellflower can be traced back to 1887 when the town was founded by George H. Fuller and named after his wife's native town of Bellflowers, Scotland. The first business in Bellflower was a general store operated by Fuller and his wife. In 1889, the Fuller family built a flour mill on what is now called Main Street and began producing flour for local consumption and export. By 1896, there were enough people living in Bellflower to form a school district; the first school opened that year on what is now called Elm Street. In 1915, oil was discovered near Bellflower; as a result, the town experienced an influx of workers and businesses. By 1923, there were enough residents to form a city council; at that time, Main Street became officially designated as the city's main street.
