The history of Bellflower can be traced back to 1887 when the town was founded by George H. Fuller and named after his wife's native town of Bellflowers, Scotland. By 1896, there were enough people living in Bellflower to form a school district; the first school opened that year on what is now called Elm Street. By 1923, there were enough residents to form a city council; at that time, Main Street became officially designated as the city's main street.
