Brookdale, CA

Brookdale is a town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 10,812 at the 2010 census. It is located in the eastern part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is bordered by Pittsburg to the north, Antioch to the east, Brentwood to the south, and Oakley to the west.

The town was founded in 1868 by John W. Brookfield as a stop on his way from his farm in Missouri to California. He named it after his home town of Brookfield, Connecticut. In 1870, he opened a general store and post office which became an important trade center for farmers in this area. In 1875, he built a hotel which was also used as a courthouse and community hall. The first school was built in 1879.

In 1886, two railroads were built through Brookdale: The Southern Pacific Railroad and the Central Pacific Railroad. This led to an increase in population because more people could come into town for shopping and business opportunities. In 1890, a water works system was installed which helped bring development to the area around Brookdale Plaza (now known as Town Center). A fire destroyed much of this development on October 25th 1904 but it was rebuilt within two years thanks to donations from local businesses and individuals.
