Elk Grove, CA

Elk Grove is a city located in Sacramento County, California. The population was 149,916 as of the 2010 census. Elk Grove is part of the Sacramento metropolitan area.

Elk Grove was founded in 1868 and named after the elk that roamed the area. The city's first business was a post office and general store. The railroad came to Elk Grove in 1872, and by 1890 there were over 100 businesses in the town. In 1915, Elk Grove had its first movie theater and it became a popular tourist destination for people from Sacramento.

In 1940, Elk Grove annexed land from unincorporated Sacramento County which increased its population by 10,000 people. During World War II, Elk Grove became a center for manufacturing aircraft parts for the war effort. After the war, many veterans returned to civilian life and started new businesses in Elk Grove.

Today, Elk Grove is an urban center with a variety of businesses and services available. The city has two public universities – UC Davis and California State University– Sacramento – as well as numerous private colleges and universities. There are also many shopping centers, restaurants, parks, and other amenities available to residents of Elk Grove.
