Sunnyvale is a city located in Santa Clara County, California. The population was 106,098 at the 2010 census. Sunnyvale is the seventh most populous city in Silicon Valley and the fourth most populous city in Northern California.

Sunnyvale was founded in 1868 as an agricultural community by the Ohlone people. In 1888, during the construction of San Francisco's Central Pacific Railroad, workers discovered large quantities of silver deposits near what is now Sunnyvale. The first commercial mine opened at Mountain View in 1891 and within a few years became one of the largest silver producers in North America. The city's name derived from "Sunny Vale", a reference to the pleasant weather conditions that prevailed during its early years. By 1900 there were enough prosperous residents to form a political entity called Sunnyvale Townsite Association which sought to incorporate as a city but failed due to opposition from San Francisco. A new attempt was made in 1903 and this time it succeeded; Sunnyvale became an incorporated town on April 7th 1904.

The 1906 San Francisco earthquake caused significant damage throughout Silicon Valley, including damage to buildings and infrastructure in Sunnyvale Townsite Association (now known as Sunnyvale). Many citizens who had fled the city returned aftershocks caused many fires which were put out with water brought from Lake Merced; however some fires did reach downtown areas including City Hall where water mains had been ruptured by falling bricks and beams from damaged buildings downtown. Damage estimates for Sunnyvale totaled over $1 million (1906 USD) with over $600,000 (2006 USD) spent on rebuilding infrastructure alone after the earthquake including new water mains, fire hydrants and sidewalks throughout town which were replaced with concrete blocks for greater durability against future earthquakes
