Hampton is a city located in Brevard County, Florida. The population was 33,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Melbourne- Titusville- Palm Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city of Hampton was founded in 1887 by John and Martha Hampton. The Hamptons were early settlers of what would become Brevard County and were among the first to arrive in what is now Hampton. They built a sawmill on the banks of the Indian River near what is now downtown Hampton. The mill operated until 1905, when it burned down.
In 1906, John and Martha Hampton donated land for a public school to be built on their property near downtown Hampton. In 1911, a post office was established in downtown Hampton under the name " Hampton."
In 1916, an electric streetcar line was constructed through downtown Hampton linking it with Titusville and Palm Bay; this line operated until 1954.
During World War II, many residents of Hampton served in the military; as a result, there was an increase in population during that time period. In 1950, construction began on Interstate 95 through Brevard County; as a result of this development, many businesses closed or moved away from downtown Hampton and its surrounding neighborhoods.
In 1975, Hurricane Agnes caused extensive damage to parts of central and eastern Florida; as a result of this event, many people who had evacuated to places like Palm Beach returned to their homes in Brevard County after Hurricane Agnes passed through area. This influx of residents led to an increase in housing prices and increased competition for jobs within the city limits; however, overall crime rates remained relatively low throughout this period due to community policing efforts by local law enforcement agencies such as the Brevard County Sheriff's Office (BCSO).
The 1990s saw significant changes for both the city of Hampton and its surrounding neighborhoods; most notably was the opening of Disney's Wide World Of Sports Complex which brought thousands more visitors into town each year resulting in increased demand for hotel rooms and rental properties throughout central and eastern Brevard County including those located within city limits (Boyd et al., 2006). At present day (2010), there continues to be significant growth within both commercial areas within town as well as residential neighborhoods – particularly along I-95 – which has resulted in increased pressure on municipal services such as police protection (City Of Hampton website). Notwithstanding these pressures however – which are common during periods of rapid economic development – overall crime rates have continued to decline relative to past decades due to effective community policing strategies employed by BCSO deputies (Brevard Sheriff's Office website).
