The history of Orland Park can be traced back to 1837 when the first settler arrived and began clearing land for a farm. In 1853, Orland Township was created from portions of Cicero Township and Oak Forest Township. The township included what are now the villages of Orland Park, Palos Hills, and Streamwood. The first post office opened in 1854 with the name "Orlando". In 1892, Orlando was renamed Orland Park after George W. Orland, an early settler and banker who helped finance development in the township.

In 1915, the Chicago-Milwaukee Railroad built a line through Orland Park that allowed commuters to travel between Chicago and Milwaukee more easily. This increased development in the township and led to an increase in population from 1,000 in 1910 to 10,000 by 1920. In 1924, a new post office was built that combined the names of both Orlando (the original name) and Orland Park (the official name).

The Great Depression hit Orland Park hard; unemployment reached 30 percent by 1933. However, through hard work and determination by residents, things started to turn around by 1938 as businesses started to reopen and jobs were available again. By 1940 there were 20 businesses open and 2,500 people employed; this number had increased to 30 businesses with 5,000 employees by 1950.

During World War II , many men enlisted or were drafted into military service; this led to an increase in women working outside the home as well as an increase in population from 3300 people in 1940 to 4700 people by 1945 due to births rather than migration . After World War II , suburbanization began happening rapidly across America ; this is why you see so many developments taking place during this time period in Orland Park . In 1954 , another post office was built that combined both names once again – "Orlando- Orland Park". This post office still exists today but has been renamed "Orlando Village Post Office" since it now serves two separate communities within town – one being north of Harlem Avenue which is predominantly Hispanic while south of Harlem Avenue which is predominantly white . In 1957 , Interstate 94 was completed which made commuting between Chicago and other parts of Illinois much easier ; this also led to more development taking place because people could now live closer to work . Between 1970-1980 there were over 100 subdivisions developed throughout town . Today there are over 200 subdivisions spread throughout town making it one of most developed suburbs in Cook County . One subdivision that has seen significant growth recently is The Villages at Willowbrook which consists primarily of single family homes with some townhomes mixed into it ; it's located just west off I-94 on Harlem Avenue near Willowbrook Road . Another subdivision that's seeing a lot of growth lately is The Lakes at Willowbrook which consists primarily of single family homes on large lots ; it's located just east off I-94 on Harlem Avenue near Lakeshore Drive . There are also several new retail stores opening up all throughout town such as Walmart Supercenter , Target , Kohl's Department Store , Home Depot , Starbucks Coffee & Tea Company etc …etc …etc …
