Campbell purchased McCoy Hill from Elijah McCoy and began developing what would become one of Livingston County's most important agricultural communities. Campbell built a mill on the banks of Spring Creek and began processing wheat into flour for sale throughout southern Illinois. By 1880, Summit Argo had emerged as one of Livingston County's leading agricultural communities with a population of 350 people.
During the early 1900s, Summit Argo experienced significant growth due to its proximity to major transportation routes such as U.S. Route 66 and Illinois Route 13. This growth led to an increase in commercial activity including a bank, two general stores, two hotels, three churches, and several grain elevators operated by various businesses within the community. By 1940, Summit Argo had reached its peak population with 1,500 residents living within its boundaries. However, due to factors such as World War II and suburbanization throughout America during the 1950s and 1960s, Summit Argo's population declined steadily until it reached its current low point with just over 900 residents in 2010 census data..
