Mandeville is a small town located in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The population of Mandeville was 9,814 as of the 2010 census. Mandeville is located in the southwestern part of Jefferson Parish and is bordered by Metairie to the north, Kenner to the east, and Lake Pontchartrain to the south.
The history of Mandeville can be traced back to 1722 when Jean Baptiste Le Moyne d'Iberville founded a trading post on what is now known as Bayou St. John. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson purchased land in what would become Mandeville from Jean Lafitte for $10,000. Jackson named his new home "The Hermitage." In 1881, Colonel Jules Dupré built a mansion on land that he had purchased from General Jackson. The mansion was later sold to Judge James Kossuth Martin who renamed it "Martin Hall." The property was later acquired by developer A.J. Mustin who developed it into apartments and commercial space.
Today, much of Mandeville's historic architecture remains intact including several antebellum homes and churches dating back to the early 1800s including Christ Church (1827), Saint John's Episcopal (1837), Saint Michael's Catholic (1839), and First Presbyterian (1841). Other notable buildings include the former Masonic Temple (1906) which now houses a law office and an antique store; Dupré Mansion (1906) which now serves as offices for Jefferson Parish government; and Martin Hall which has been converted into apartments and condominiums.
Real estate in Mandeville consists primarily of single-family homes ranging from modest cottages to large mansions with many featuring plantation style architecture reminiscent of days gone by. There are also a number of apartment complexes consisting mostly of two-story buildings with balconies overlooking downtown Mandeville or Lake Pontchartrain respectively.
