Pasadena, MD

Pasadena is a city located in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 28,095. Pasadena is a suburb of Washington D.C., and is part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area.

The city was founded in 1751 by George Calvert as a small farming community on land he had purchased from Lord Baltimore. The town's name comes from Spanish "pasaje," meaning "passage." In 1814, General Andrew Jackson marched through Pasadena on his way to victory at the Battle of Hagerstown; today's U.S. Route 40 passes through the city center commemorating this event.

In 1836, Thomas Greenleaf Eliot (the father of Toni Morrison) moved to Pasadena and began publishing The Pioneer newspaper which helped spur growth in the town and make it one of the most important centers for education in Maryland during that time period.

In 1892, Pasadena became an incorporated town with a population of 3,000 people and boasted two churches (St John's Episcopal Church and First Presbyterian Church), four schools (including Howard University High School), two banks (The Bank of America and The Farmers & Merchants Bank), three hotels (The Arlington Hotel and The Mount Vernon Hotel), three stores (Alden & Harlow Hardware Store, J&L Drugsstore, and Withers Drugstore), one brewery ( Pasadena Brewing Company) as well as several other businesses including a blacksmith shop, carriage factory and printing press.

As early as 1906 there were proposals to extend streetcar service into Pasadena but these plans never came to fruition due to opposition from some residents who felt that such services would bring too much traffic into their quiet residential streets. However by 1910 streetcar service had arrived via horse-drawn vehicles running along Main Street between Howard University Hospital on one side and St John's Episcopal Church on the other side before terminating at what is now known as Old Main Street near where Walgreens now stands; this route later became part of Montgomery County Transit District Route 8 which operated until 1974 when it was replaced by bus service operated by MCTD).

During World War II many residents worked in defense related industries such as Lockheed Martin or Boeing located in neighboring towns such as Bethesda or Rockville while others served in the military; after World War II many veterans returned home only to find that their homes had been destroyed or damaged beyond repair due to neglect resulting from post-war economic conditions which left many families struggling to make ends meet.

However despite these challenges Pasadena managed to maintain its status as an important center for education thanks largely in part to contributions made by individuals like Dr Charles Drew who pioneered blood banking techniques while working at Howard University Hospital before founding Blood Centers USA which remains one of the largest blood collection organizations in North America today; furthermore Dr Drew also played an instrumental role in establishing Howard University as one of America's leading historically black universities which has since become known worldwide for its excellence in both academics and athletics programs including being home to some world renowned basketball coaches such as John Thompson III who led Georgetown Hoyas team to three NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championships while coaching current NBA players Kyrie Irving Kyrie Irvingand Gordon Hayward among others).

Today much has changed since those early days however Pasadena remains an important center for commerce with several major retail chains having locations within city limits including Target Corporation which opened its first store outside Minnesota back in 1990 followed by Walmart Incorporated which opened its first store outside Texas back in 1962; furthermore Amazon Web Services announced plans earlier this year to open its second headquarters location within Greater Washington D C region comprising over 50 000 jobs – this will be located just north east of downtown Pasadena within sight distance from where Walgreens currently stands).
