The town was first settled in 1630 as part of the settlement of Woburn by Puritans from England. The area now known as Dedham was then part of the town of Hingham. In 1636, Dedham separated from Hingham and became an independent town. The first recorded sale of land in what would become Dedham occurred on July 12, 1636 when John Leverett sold land to James Prudden for £40 sterling.
