Dorchester Center, MA

Dorchester Center is a historic district in Boston, Massachusetts. The district encompasses the heart of Dorchester, including the neighborhoods of Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, and West Roxbury. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966.

The area that now comprises Dorchester Center was first settled by the Pilgrims in 1630. The town of Dorchester was chartered in 1634 and grew rapidly as a center for trade and manufacturing. In the 18th century, wealthy merchants built grand homes in the district, which became known as "the Athens of America." The area saw significant growth during the late 19th century as waves of immigrants arrived from Ireland and Italy. By 1900, Dorchester had become one of Boston's most densely populated neighborhoods.

Today, much of Dorchester Center remains unchanged from its colonial-era roots. Many of the district's elegant homes are now occupied by families who have been living here for generations. Commercial activity continues to thrive along busy streets such as Washington Street and Columbus Avenue. Several important institutions located in Dorchester Center include Boston Latin School (1635), Emmanuel College (1824), and John F Kennedy Presidential Library (1962).
