The area that now comprises Roslindale was originally part of Dedham. In 1630, John Winthrop and his fellow Puritans purchased of land from the Massachusett tribe for what would become known as Winthrop's City. The first house in what would become Roslindale was built by Samuel Maverick on what is now Harrison Avenue in 1631.
In 1725, James Bowdoin purchased of land from the Wampanoag tribe for what would become Bowdoin Square (now Bowdoin Street). This area became home to many wealthy merchants and politicians over the years; among them were James Otis Jr., who lived on nearby Beacon Street; James Freeman Clarke, who lived on Washington Street; and Daniel Webster, who lived on Boylston Street.
In 1802, Roslindale became part of Boston when it annexed Dedham. At this time there were only a few houses here; most of it was farmland. Over time however, more houses were built and today Roslindale is one of Boston's most densely populated neighborhoods with a mix of old and new housing stock.
Today's real estate market in Roslindale is very competitive due to its close proximity to downtown Boston as well as other affluent neighborhoods such as Brookline and Newton Highlands. There are a number of factors that contribute to this competition: high demand for housing due to an influx of young professionals seeking urban living options; limited supply due to zoning regulations that restrict development within certain areas; and strong demand from investors looking for high returns on their investment properties.
One common type of property found in Roslindale are single-family homes that range from modestly-priced starter homes to luxury condos or townhouses. There are also a number of multifamily buildings available including apartments, condominiums, co-ops and retirement communities.
