Lynnfield is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 24,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Boston metropolitan area. Lynnfield is home to the corporate headquarters of IBM and other major businesses.
The town was first settled in 1630 as part of Dorchester and was officially incorporated on February 2, 1713. Lynnfield's name is derived from its founder, John Lynn (1608-1676), who acquired land in what is now Lynnfield in 1635 from the Wampanoag sachem Massasoit. He named his settlement after his birthplace in Lincolnshire, England.
In 1892 George Pullman built a factory near what would become Pullman Square for making railroad cars; this became one of the largest employers in Lynnfield until it closed in 1987. The factory site has since been redeveloped into a mixed-use complex including luxury apartments and retail space.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which are land and , or 1%, are water. The highest point within Lynnfield is at an elevation of above sea level on Blue Hill Avenue near where Blue Hill Country Club resides; this location also marks the eastern border between Brookline and Newton townships as well as between Boston and Cambridge counties (the latter two counties being entirely within Middlesex County).
