Montgomery is a city located in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 26,868. The city is situated on the eastern border of Oakland County and is part of the Detroit metropolitan area.

Montgomery was founded in 1825 and was named for General James Montgomery, who fought in the War of 1812. The first settler in Montgomery was Solomon Sibley, who arrived in 1825 with his wife and four children. The first business opened in Montgomery was a general store operated by Sibley and two other partners. In 1827, Sibley sold his share in the store to John Pemberton and moved to Jackson Township to farm land he had purchased there.

In 1830, Pemberton built a sawmill on Mill Creek near what is now downtown Montgomery. The mill became one of the largest employers in town and helped spur growth throughout the community. In addition to milling timber, Pemberton also manufactured lumber products such as barrels and boxes out of locally-sourced wood. By 1840, Pemberton's business had grown so large that he decided to move his operations out of town and build a new mill on Gratiot River near present-day White Lake Township. This new mill became known as Pemberton Mill after its founder; it remained operational until 1902 when it burned down during a firestorm that swept through southeastern Michigan that year.

In 1845, Solomon Sibley's grandson Jesse opened up another general store on Main Street (now Capitol Avenue). Jesse's son Solon took over running the store after his father's death; he continued to run it until 1889 when it closed due to competition from larger stores opening up throughout town (the first department store opened up just two blocks from Jesse's General Store).

The early businesses in Montgomery were primarily small family-owned enterprises; however, this began to change starting around 1870 when larger businesses began moving into town lured by low taxes rates (the city didn't incorporate until 1906). Some notable businesses that started up during this time include Leland & Larkin Manufacturing Company (a manufacturer of agricultural equipment), J&L Hatters (a hat factory), Wm Hutton & Son (a carriage manufacturer), Atherton Mills (a flour mill), Goudreau Brothers Hardware Store (an early hardware retailer), Dennison Drug Company (an early pharmacy), Fulton Dry Goods Company (an early department store), Mason & Dixon Grocery Store (an early grocery retailer), Kline Furniture Company (an early furniture retailer), Moore Bros Jewelers & Watch Repair Shop( an early jeweler/watch repair shop)and many others... In 1886, Montgomery annexed part of White Lake Township which increased its population by more than 2 thousand residents overnight! This rapid growth led to problems with overcrowding as well as inadequate infrastructure such as inadequate water supplies and sanitation facilities; these issues were eventually resolved through annexation into neighboring cities such as Ferndale which allowed for more efficient municipal services provisioning while still maintaining some degree of local autonomy for residents within those boundaries . Today , many longtime businesses have either closed or relocated away from downtown due to increased competition from big box stores , but there are still several thriving small businesses located within walking distance from each other . One recent example is Revolution Brewing which opened its doors just down Capitol Avenue from where Jesse's General Store once stood ; this brewery has become an anchor for revitalization efforts happening along Main Street . There are also several restaurants located within walking distance including Bongo Java , Zoup ! Burger Bar , Five Guys Burgers & Fries , Wingstop , Subway Sandwiches & Salads , Chipotle Mexican Grill , Moe 's Southwest Grill among others...

While there are many reasons why people might choose to live or invest in real estate within Montgomery City limits - ranging from affordability relative to other areas within metro Detroit ; excellent schools ; proximity tot he thriving downtown district ; top rated public safety ratings ; etc - one overriding factor seems to be its low tax rate compared with other areas surrounding it . According to data collected by Forbes magazine between 2013-2015*, median home prices within Oakland County ranged from $206K-$248K while median home prices within Wayne County ranged from $214K-$269K* ; meanwhile median home prices within Macomb County ranged from $192K-$247K* (*data sourced via Forbes) . This wide disparity between county averages can be partially attributed t o taxation policies enacted at both state level ans local level - specifically how much property tax revenue each county receives based upon their population size vs value assessed vs taxable properties therein vs exemptions granted etc... whereas Macomb County receives significantly more property tax revenue per capita than either Wayne or Oakland Counties thanks largely t o their higher value assessed properties coupled with generous exemptions granted thereto... Additionally although all three counties have relatively high property taxes relative t o income levels paid by homeowners therein - again Macomb County fares comparatively better owing t o their lower taxable values coupled wit h relatively modest income levels paid thereby resulting i n smaller annual tax bills per household ... Needless t o say th at all three counties have their pros an cons but overall I believe that living or investing i n Montgomery City limits would generally rank among th e best options available given its combination off all aforementioned factors
