Rose Hill is a small town located in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population of Rose Hill was 2,827 as of the 2010 census. The town is located on the north side of the Pearl River and is bordered by the towns of Brandon to the east, Horn Lake to the south, and Flowood to the west.
The history of Rose Hill dates back to 1817 when it was founded by James Hogg and his brother-in-law John McFarland. At that time, Rose Hill consisted of just a few buildings and was known as "the little village on the Pearl." In 1824, James Hogg sold his share in Rose Hill to John McFarland and moved to Texas.
In 1837, Andrew Johnson purchased a tract of land in what is now Rose Hill from John McFarland for $1,000. Johnson built a plantation on this land which he called "Rosehill." In 1840, Johnson sold Rosehill to General Andrew Jackson for $30,000.
In 1853, General Andrew Jackson's grandson Major General Winfield Scott bought Rosehill from General Andrew Jackson's son Major General Joseph Ewing Scott. Scott renamed his plantation "Rosehill" after his wife's family home in Scotland.
In 1865, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down much of Winfield Scott's plantation including all but four buildings which were used as hospitals for Union troops during their campaign against Vicksburg. After the war ended in 1865, Major General Winfield Scott rebuilt most of his plantation using slave labor which he had brought with him from Africa.
In 1902, Colonel Wirt C Dabney purchased Rosehill from Major General Winfield Scott for $22500. Dabney renamed his estate "Dabney Heights" after himself and lived there until 1916 when he sold it to Dr J R Hickson who owned it until 1923 when it was sold again this time to Mrs Lula Mae Harris who lived there until her death in 1951 at which point her daughter Mrs Evelyn Harris inherited it . In 1954 Mrs Evelyn Harris donated Dabney Heights Estate (now known as Dabney Oaks)to The United Methodist Church where it remains today .

Over time this settlement grew into a small town with businesses such as a general store (owned by James Hogg), cotton gin (owned by John McFarland), blacksmith shop (owned by George Washington Carver), sawmill (owned by William Pemberton), grist mill (owned by Elijah Hickson), two churches - one white Baptist Church founded by James Hogg and one African Methodist Episcopal Church founded by Reverend Peter Williams - schools including an elementary school operated jointly between white Baptists and African Methodists Episcopalians - several homes including those belonging to prominent citizens such as Governor Andrew Johnson - plantations including those owned or operated by prominent citizens such as General Andrew Jackson - railroad tracks running through town connecting Brandon with Horn Lake - riverboat landing providing transportation between Brandon Landing downstream on Pearl River where steamboats took passengers upstream past downtown Horn Lake upriver past downtown Brandon where they disembarked at stores located along Main Street before continuing their journey downstream towards Vicksburg via Yazoo Pass
