The Price of Home in Harris, Missouri

Harris is a city located in the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,521. The city is the county seat of St. Louis County and is included in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Harris has been designated as a Main Street City by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is one of only two cities in Missouri designated as such (the other being Cape Girardeau).

The first European settlers arrived in what would become Harris around 1770, when French fur traders established trading posts along the Mississippi River near present-day downtown St. Louis. The area that would become Harris was part of Spanish Louisiana until 1803, when it became part of America following its victory in the War of 1812.

In 1819, General James Wilkinson purchased land along the Mississippi River from Spain and established a military post which he named Fort Bellefontaine after his wife, Bellefontaine House in Scotland where he had been stationed during the war. In 1826, Wilkinson sold Fort Bellefontaine to Colonel John Coffee Hays for $40,000 and moved to Mexico where he served as military governor until his death in 1830 at age 54 years old; his remains were returned to St Louis for burial at Forest Hill Cemetery next to those of his wife who had died two years earlier at age 43 years old (they are both buried together under a single headstone).

In 1833, Colonel Hays subdivided his land into lots and began selling them to settlers; among those who purchased property were Joseph Drexel (who later became one of Philadelphia's most prominent financiers) and John Edwards (a future U.S Senator from Missouri). In 1840, Edwards built a sawmill on Mill Creek which was later renamed after him as Edwardsville; this mill operated until 1905 when it was destroyed by fire (the site now houses an antique mall).

In 1845-46, Major Henry Rowe Schoolcraft explored portions of what would become Harris while on an expedition sponsored by President James K Polk; Schoolcraft noted several features which still bear his name including Rowe's Bluff (named for Schoolcraft's commanding officer), Schoolcraft Island (now part of Laclede's Landing), and Schoolcraft Rapids which form part of Laclede's Landing just downstream from downtown Harrisburg ().

The first railroad line arrived in Harris on October 4th ,1854 when the Hannibal & St Joseph Railroad opened its tracks between Chesterfield and Jefferson City (). This line eventually became part of Union Pacific Railroad (); today , Amtrak operates passenger trains through Harris on their "Capitol Limited" route between Chicago and Washington D C ().

During World War I , Camp Shelby was established near present-day I-270/I-55 interchange as an training ground for soldiers heading overseas (); this camp closed shortly after World War II ended . In 1948 , Interstate 270 was completed linking I-55 with I-44 ; this highway has since played a significant role in developing suburban areas surrounding Harrisburg ().

On November 1st , 1963 , voters approved incorporation referendum which resulted in formation on January 6th 1964of City Of Harrisburg () ; since then , many new development projects have taken place within city limits including: The Shoppes At Westport Plaza shopping center opened in 1986 ; Westport Crossing opened adjacent to it featuring upscale retailers such as Neiman Marcus & Saks Fifth Avenue ; Park Place Mall opened adjacent to Park Place Stadium featuring JCPenney & Sears / Roebuck & Co.; Town Center at Westport Plaza shopping center featuring Macy's & Sears / Roebuck & Co.; Promenade at Westport Plaza shopping center featuring Nordstrom Rack & Dick’s Sporting Goods ); Willowbrook Mall opened adjacent Willowbrook Golf Course ) .
