Atlantic City is a city located in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the city's population was 32,675. It is part of the New York metropolitan area and is adjacent to Philadelphia. The city was founded as a resort town on the Atlantic Ocean in 1854 and became known as "The Resorts of the East." In 1978, it was designated as a National Historic Landmark.

Real estate in Atlantic City has always been an important part of its economy. The first hotels were built in 1851 and by 1870 there were more than 1,000 hotel rooms available. In 1892, real estate developer Charles Feltman bought land on which he planned to build a new resort town on the ocean called Surfside Heights. However, when he died before construction could begin, his son-in-law George M. Hill took over and completed construction of what would become known as Atlantic City Boardwalk Hotel (now Trump Taj Mahal). The Boardwalk quickly became one of the most popular tourist destinations in America with more than 25 million visitors by 1920.

In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established Camp David just outside Atlantic City as an emergency wartime retreat for top government officials and their families; it remained open until 1973. During World War II many military bases were established around Atlantic City including Fort Monmouth (now Joint Base McGuire–Dix– Lakehurst), Naval Air Station Lakehurst (now Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Lakehurst), Camp Evans (now Fort Dix) and Camp Forrest (now Fort Drum). Many servicemen stationed at these bases settled in Atlantic City after their discharge or retirement; this led to a growth in residential areas such as Ventnor Heights and Brigantine Beach which are now some of the most affluent neighborhoods in town.

Since 1978 when it was designated a National Historic Landmark by Congress, real estate development has been focused on restoring older buildings and creating new condominiums along the Boardwalk or near casinos like Revel Casino Resort & Spa or Caesars Palace Resort & Casino which have helped make Atlantic City one of the most expensive places to live in America with median home prices reaching $280 thousand according to Zillow data from January 2018 .

The casino industry has also had an impact on real estate prices with casinos often requiring large amounts of land for their facilities which can drive up prices for surrounding properties .

However despite these challenges , recent years have seen steady growth both commercial and residential with several high-profile projects currently under development including: The Promenade at White Horse Pike which will include luxury apartments , retail space , restaurants , health club facilities , a spa , parking garage and public park ; The redevelopment of historic Commodore Hotel into upscale apartments ; A mixed use project called Residences at Liberty State Park that will include 750 units ranging from condos to rental units ; And finally Trump SoHo which will include 535 luxury apartments .
