Newtonville is a small town located in Morris County, New Jersey. The population was 10,811 as of the 2010 United States Census. It is part of the Morristown- Lincroft, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The town was founded in 1798 by Nicholas Newton and named for his father-in-law, General Isaac Newton. The first settler in what would become Newtonville was John Haring who built a mill on the Raritan River near what is now the intersection of Route 23 and County Road 516. In 1802, Nicholas Newton purchased Haring's mill and began to develop the area around it into a small community that he named Newtonville after his father-in-law. The first house in what would become Newtonville was built by Nicholas' brother-in-law, Dr. David Hosack.
In 1812, Nicholas opened a general store which became the center of activity in town. He also served as postmaster and treasurer for the village which at that time had a population of about 100 people. In 1814, Nicholas erected a sawmill on Mill Brook which became one of the town's major industries. By 1840, there were six mills operating in Newtonville: two gristmills (one powered by water from Mill Brook), one cotton mill (powered by steam from one of Nicholas' sawmills), and three woolen mills (one powered by water from Mill Brook).
During the early 1800s, transportation through New Jersey was difficult due to poor roads and lack of bridges so most commerce took place along waterways such as rivers and streams which made towns like Newtonville very important because they served as hubs for trade between different parts of New Jersey. As transportation improved over time, however, towns began to lose their importance because they could not compete with larger cities such as Newark or Trenton for business transactions; this is why many towns throughout New Jersey went through a period of decline during the late 1800s and early 1900s. However, thanks to efforts made by local businesses and residents alike; including building new roads and bridges; rebuilding after fires; establishing schools; creating parks; etc., many towns have since regained their former glory and are now thriving communities once again!
Today, Newtonville continues to be an important community due to its close proximity to major highways (including Route 23) as well as its abundance of shopping options including several supermarkets chains such as ShopRite/ Pathmark/ Stop & Shop); several big box stores such as Walmart/Target/ Home Depot); numerous boutiques; restaurants ranging from fast food joints to high end establishments; etc.. Additionally, due to its location within commuting distance from both Manhattan (about 25 miles) and Philadelphia (about 45 miles), many people who work in those larger cities choose to live in or commute into Newtonville instead!
