Phillipsburg, NJ

Phillipsburg is a small town located in Warren County, New Jersey. The population was 10,898 as of the 2010 census. Phillipsburg is known for its well-preserved historic district and its proximity to the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The town's economy is based on retail sales, health care, and professional services.

The land that now comprises Phillipsburg was first settled by the Dutch in 1683. The town was chartered by King George II in 1758 and named for General James Phillips, an American Revolutionary War hero. The early settlers were primarily farmers and millers who raised wheat, corn, rye and other grains. In 1801, a sawmill was erected on the banks of the Raritan River which became an important economic driver in Phillipsburg during the early 1800s.

In 1848, a railroad line was built through Phillipsburg which helped spur growth in the town. By 1850 there were over 100 businesses in Phillipsburg; many of these businesses were related to transportation or manufacturing. In 1865, a fire destroyed much of downtown Philipsburg; however, thanks to volunteer firefighters from throughout Warren County and donations from local residents, most of the business district was rebuilt within two years.

During the late 1800s and early 1900s Philipsburg experienced significant growth as it became home to several large companies including J&L Hatters (now JB Hi-Fi), Waring Manufacturing Company (now part of Electrolux), Goudey Cheese (now part of Kraft Foods), Union Carbide Corporation (now Dow Chemical Company) and Rohm & Haas Company (now part of BASF). These companies helped drive economic development in Phillipsburg by creating jobs for local residents and generating revenue that was reinvested into local businesses and infrastructure such as roads and schools.

Today Phillipsburg remains an important commercial center with several large retailers including Walmart Supercenter, Target stores , Kohl's Department Store , Bed Bath & Beyond , Menard's Hardware store , Home Depot , Lowe's Home Improvement store , Macy's Department Store . There are also several medical facilities including Saint Barnabas Medical Center as well as numerous professional service firms such as Ernst & Young LLP . Additionally there are numerous restaurants including Olive Garden Italian Restaurant chain Bennigan's Grill restaurant chain Chick-fil-A fast food restaurant Dunkin' Donuts coffee shop Subway sandwich shop . There are also several churches including First Presbyterian Church United Methodist Church St Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church Catholic Church Christ Episcopal Church .
