Somerdale is a borough in Somerset County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 10,927,[8][9] reflecting an increase of 1,539 (+25.7%) from the 8,836 counted in the 2000 Census,[10] which had in turn increased by 2,711 (+40.4%) from the 6,569 counted in the 1990 Census.[11]

The borough was formed on April 11, 1894,[12] from portions of Bridgewater Township and Somerville Township.[13][14] The borough's name is derived from its location on Somerford Lake (now known as Manalapan Reservoir), which was created by damming the Raritan River.[15][16][17]

According to the United States Census Bureau, Somerdale has a total area of 3.0 square miles (7.8 km2), all of it land.[18] The borough borders Bridgewater Township to the north and east; Piscataway Township to the south; and Hillsborough Township to the west. Interstate 78 passes through Somerdale as does Route 24. The New York City Subway's Montclair- Boonton Line runs through Somerdale as well as serving nearby Piscataway Township and Hillsborough Township stations on adjacent rail lines owned by NJ Transit.[19][20][21]

As of 2010[update], there were 10,927 people residing in Somerdale Borough: 49% male and 51% female. The median age was 36 years old with children under 18 living with their parents: 28% were married couples living together; 12% had a female householder with no husband present; and 54% were non-families. 38% of all households were made up of individuals and 16% had someone living alone who was 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.24 and there were 1,866 families residing in the borough: 33% had children under 18 living with them; 21% were married couples without children; 26% had a female householder with no husband present; and 41% were non-families
