The borough was founded on October 15th 1888 and incorporated as a city on March 14th 1903[6]. The city was named for West New York Township,[7][8][9][10] one of nine townships that were combined to form Hudson County on February 7th 1693.[11][12] The township was named for West New England,[13][14] one of the four British colonies that became part of America.[15][16] The other three were East Jersey (now known as Jersey City), North Jersey (now known as Newark) and South Jersey (now known as Camden).[17][18]

The history of West New York dates back to prehistoric times when Native Americans inhabited this area including Lenni Lenape who resided along what are now Bergenline Avenue and Union Street[19]. In 1693 during Dutch rule portions of what would become Hudson County were granted to English settlers under Governor William Penn who established West New England Township with a population estimated at 1,000-1,500 people[20]. By 1800 there were only about 100 Dutch settlers remaining in what would become West New York Township while English immigrants made up most of the population[21]. In 1825 after becoming part of newly created Bergen County there were 1,500 residents living in what would become West New York Borough while by 1840 this number had increased to 5,000 people making it one of Bergen County's most populous municipalities[22]. By 1880 there were 10 businesses operating within West New York Borough while by 1890 this number had increased to 50 businesses and by 1900 there were 150 businesses operating within its boundaries[23]. During World War II many residents left their homes due to air raids but returned after hostilities ceased[24].
