The town was founded in 1786 and named for General James Barry, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1802, Huntington donated land to form a Presbyterian church and school district. The first schoolhouse was built on this property and served as both a church and school until 1812 when a new schoolhouse was erected on what is now Park Avenue.

In 1817, Dr. John Silliman established an agricultural college on land that he had purchased from Colonel Ebenezer Huntington.
