The Changing Face of Kendall: From a Rural Village to a Suburban Community

Kendall is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 11,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the White PlainsNew Rochelle metropolitan area.

The Town of Kendall was first settled around 1798 by Nicholas Kendall and his family from Connecticut. They purchased land from the Mohawk Indians on the east side of the Hudson River and began to farm and build homes. In 1802, Nicholas Kendall built a gristmill on what is now Mill Street in what would become downtown Kendall. The mill was destroyed by fire in 1825 but was rebuilt soon after. By 1840, there were thirty-six families living in Kendall and it had become an important shipping point for produce from upstate New York.

In 1892, the Erie Railroad opened a station in Kendall and began to develop the town as a commercial center for Westchester County. By 1900, there were over 1,000 businesses in Kendall and it had become one of the largest towns in Westchester County. The Town of Kendall annexed parts of neighboring communities including Pine Brook (1892), Hawthorne (1903), Harrison (1906), Croton-on- Hudson (1907), Valhalla (1920), Bedford Hills (1922) and Elmsford (1923). These annexations increased its population to 12,000 by 1930 and 20,000 by 1950.

During World War II, many factories were built in Kendall to produce military equipment for use overseas. After the war ended, these factories closed down and unemployment became an issue for many residents of Kendall. In response to this problem, Governor Nelson Rockefeller created Jobs Development Corporation which invested money into businesses that would create jobs for residents of Kendall. This program helped revive the economy of Kendall which continued to grow throughout the 1960s and 1970s due to new development such as Interstate 684 being constructed through town along with new shopping centers such as Crossgates Mall which opened in 1976 .

Today , Kendal is still an important commercial center with many large shopping malls including Crossgates Mall , Metro Center , White Plains Plaza , Saw Mill River Plaza , Tanger Outlets at Crossgates , Tanger Outlets at Saw Mill River , Kings Pointe Shopping Center & Promenade at Kips Bay . There are also many restaurants including Olive Garden Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria , Red Lobster Seafood Grill & Bar , Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar / Steakhouse / American Grille / Bennigan's Irish Pub & Grill / Chili's Mexican Grill / Ruby Tuesday Upscale Casual Dining . There are also several banks including Chase Bank National Association , Citibank NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BANKS AND HSBC BANK USA LOCATIONS . There are also several medical facilities including Mount Sinai Medical Center located just outside town limits as well as hospitals located within town such as Westchester Medical Center .
